BRANDING TIPS

We're professional photographers, Mr + Mrs and Mom + Dad. We like to share insights into our industry and empower other photographers to build their biz.

Hi, WE'RE ERICA+JON

PERSONAL

We did something new over the last couple of weeks. After shooting tens of thousands of frames through our trusty camera bodies, we finally treated them to a day at the spa. While we were secretly envious and wishing we were being treated to our own relaxing day at the spa with a couple’s massage, we were happy to finally do this for our cameras. We work them hard. Without them, we would have a terrible time trying to make beautiful photographs for families and brands. So after using them relentlessly, they were finally sent in to be serviced and cleaned by a Canon Service Department.

This might sound weird, but it was a little scary parting with our cameras. Those two pieces of equipment mean everything to us. They are the tools of our trade and we treat them like children! It was unnerving thinking of letting them out of our sight, let alone leaving them for multiple days in someone else’s care! But, we knew they needed to have image sensor cleaning, and it was time for us to trust the process. After all, this facility processes tons of cameras day after day!

Digital cameras in particular need regular maintenance and cleaning, and to be honest, we’d let ours go far too long without it. See, the removable lenses open up the camera body to dust, dirt, small hairs, Cheeto fingers…you name it! And with so many moving parts inside, it’s almost impossible to keep them completely clean no matter how careful you are! Especially for those of us here in the desert, the dust is a constant battle while switching lenses!

Jon gives our cameras and lenses a cleaning before every session, but there are some areas we simply do not try to clean ourselves. The biggest is the image sensor! You know you need your own image sensor cleaned if you start seeing small black dots or fine lines in the white spaces of your images. Those little imperfections are simply dust, lint, or hair on the image sensor and it needs to be cleaned by a factory certified repair center.

We dropped Jon’s camera off first and prayed everything would turn out well! We’d heard horror stories of cameras coming back with all of the settings completely reset and worse! We hoped we wouldn’t have the same experience.

And we didn’t!

We got a call a couple of days later to pick up the camera body and found it perfectly wrapped in a dust free cling wrap and functioning perfectly!

Having your gear serviced regularly is a wise investment. You’ve likely put a lot of money into purchasing the equipment that serves you and your clients well, and having it maintained ensures it will continue to work well with no unpleasant surprises! Best part?! It was pretty inexpensive! The service center we brought our camera bodies to only charged $65 per camera. It’s a small fee to pay to protect your gear!
