Hi, WE'RE ERICA+JON

PERSONAL

Hi, I’m Erica, and I’m a “what-if-er.” After recent events, I couldn’t help but wonder: Would your business survive and continue to grow if Instagram suddenly got shut off?

For a lot of photographers, Instagram feels like the heartbeat of their business. It’s how we connect with clients, show off our work, and sometimes even land those dream gigs. But here’s the thing: building your business on a platform you don’t own is risky. Let’s talk about how to build a solid foundation for your business that doesn’t hinge entirely on social media.

1. Blog, Baby, Blog

Before you cancel me out on this one, hear me out: blogging works! You don’t have to go all-in like Jon and I did when we blogged every.single.day (seriously, what were we thinking?!). Just pick a schedule you can stick to – whether that’s every other week, once a month, or something in between – and commit to it.

Your blog can:

  • Show off your beautiful photos: Share stunning images from your sessions and paint the picture of what it’s like to work with you.
  • Build trust with potential clients: Use your blog to tell stories and show them why they’ll love working with you.
  • Boost your SEO: Blogging helps people find your website when they’re searching for photographers. (And while we’re at it, make sure your website looks amazing and represents your brand!)

There’s a lot of magic happening behind the scenes when you blog consistently, so don’t underestimate it.

2. Get Out There in Real Life

Instagram makes connecting easy, but nothing beats real-life conversations. People crave genuine connections! Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Invite someone to coffee, lunch, or happy hour: Instead of sending another DM, meet face-to-face and share how you can help.
  • Cold outreach works, too: Send emails, make phone calls, or (like Jon used to do) walk into local businesses and introduce yourself.
  • Bring a media kit: Back when we started, Jon walked into businesses with just a business card. Imagine how much more confident he would have felt with a beautifully branded media kit that showcased who we are and what we do! (Need a media kit? You can grab our template here!)

These real-world connections build the trust that turns into long-term clients. It might feel old-school, but it works.

3. Share Your Goals (and Don’t Be Afraid to Ask!)

Sometimes, landing big opportunities is as simple as letting people know what you want. Here’s a true story from our own journey:

We told a friend, Michelle, that we wanted to focus on branding photography. Michelle had a friend who worked for the Chicago White Sox, and when they needed a photographer, she referred us. The White Sox reached out, and we booked the job!

It really is that simple:

  • Share what you’re working on and who you want to work with.
  • Be specific about what you’re looking for.
  • Ask for referrals. People love helping when they can!

Word-of-mouth referrals are gold, and the people in your network can be your biggest cheerleaders if you let them.

Conclusion: Build a Foundation That Lasts

Instagram is amazing, but it shouldn’t be the only tool in your business toolbox. By blogging, making real-life connections, and sharing your goals, you’re creating a foundation that can weather any storm.

The growth and success of your business should rest on something you own and control. So, start building that foundation today!
