Guys.
This one’s for you.
Here is some honest, plain, outright guy talk coming straight at you.
Are you ready?
We already know what you might be thinking. We know there is a good chance that the upcoming photo session your lady scheduled may not be at the top of your list for great ways to spend an evening. So before we jump into some style advice – we want to talk about something more important.
Her.
There’s a reason you’ll be posing in front of our cameras soon. It’s because she loves you and wants timeless images of this time in life you are both sharing together. She wants to have the memories to look back on when your children have grown and your hair is grayed with wisdom and the joy of a full life. She wants to be able to say, ‘Remember when…?’ and be able to be back in that moment in an instant. This is so much more than updated photos. It’s documenting the love story you are creating, and for that reason we ask – can you give her a couple hours that will mean the word to her? We thought so too 🙂
So now that you know how important this is to her, let’s talk about something else. What to wear!
Leave the Jeans at Home
Fitted pants such as dress slacks and chinos are the most refined option for men. As we detailed in Part 1: Style Tips for Her , your lady is already going all out with a beautiful dress, pro hair and makeup, and beautiful accessories, so it’s best to leave jeans and loose-fitting pants at home and wear a more tailored pant for your session. Muted, solid colors work best to compliment most women’s dresses. Try sticking with tried and true classics like grays, neutrals, and blues and avoid prints, patterns or pinstripes. They can be distracting and take away from the emotion of the photo. Feel free to mix up colors as well to create a dynamic look! Pairing a sport coat with a different pant color can make for a more interesting combination.
Roll Like J. Crew
Have you ever noticed the mannequins in stores like J. Crew, Banana Republic and Nordstrom usually aren’t just wearing one clothing piece on top? They are usually layered, with a shirt/sweater/blazer combo, or shirt/tie/vest three piece. This is intentional – layers look great on men and add visual interest on camera. Depending on the time of year, it might be warm outside making you shy away from layering, but we’d like to encourage that it is worth an hour or two of being warm for images that will last you both a lifetime! Remember how important these photos are to her, then think about if it is worth it! Don’t be afraid to get creative with layering!
I Don’t Always Have My Photos Taken, but When I do…
…well, there’s no Dos Equis at the end of this slogan, but how about ‘when I do, I prefer to show off the details!’ Guys – It’s all about the details. There are so many ways to add different pieces to your outfit and elevate it to the next level. Watches, ties, suspenders, and colored socks are all details that are easy to incorporate and can go a long way to make a statement. Want to have multiple looks during your session with limited changing? Bring different details to change up your look. For example, start with a button down, tie and a blazer for your first look. Then add in a v-neck sweater under the blazer for a completely different feel! It’s really that easy!
We hope these tips will help you feel prepared for your next photo session! Remember, it’s for her! Most of all, we hope we get to experience it with you!! Keep an eye out for Part 3 in our series, Prepping Your Family!
