I love having my nails painted! For the longest time, I had a bad habit of painting my nails and then ignoring taking the polish off when it finally started to chip. It was kind of fun picking it off bit by bit, so I’d leave it alone! That week, my mom and sister had been encouraging me to take off my old nail polish and redo my nails. It didn’t bother me one bit though, so I left it! Chipped red fingernail polish – what was so wrong with that? If only I would have known what was going to happen next…
It was Friday night, January second, and Jon and I were at dinner at one of our favorite restaurants – Kona Grill. As college students, it was the perfect place to go for a nice date night dinner without breaking the bank! We shared the Macadamia Nut Chicken, which is still a favorite dish of ours and comes with the most delicious mashed potatoes and sautéed vegetables! It seemed like a normal date night, except that Jon excused himself to the restroom about 10 times! That was far from normal.
When they brought out our dessert and he excused himself again, I did what any loving girlfriend would do. I dug in without him!! If he was going to leave me alone with a warm chocolate brownie dripping with vanilla ice cream, then it meant there was more for me!
When we left the restaurant, things got even more interesting. Jon told me that he had a surprise for me, but that I couldn’t ask where we were going. The area of Gilbert, Arizona that we were in was not very hard to get around, but Jon kept driving around aimlessly. After driving around and around in circles, I couldn’t help but ask him where we were going! I was beginning to think that even he didn’t know where we were going! Luckily, he realized where we were and pulled into the parking lot at the park. When he told me that he wanted to go for a walk around the park like we would when were were on campus, all I thought about was how sweet he was and happily grabbed his hand!
That’s when I saw it. A big rock. But it wasn’t JUST a big rock. It was a big rock with two red camping chairs perfectly placed in front of it. There was Jon’s black guitar case. And two coffees – one black and one caramel macchiato. It was a super unexpected surprise, and I didn’t know what to think of it – especially when I saw my dad’s blue Ford pulling out of the parking lot.
Jon grabbed his guitar and played me the sweetest song I’d ever heard. It was an original. One he’d written just for me. I’d heard it before a couple of years back when he asked me to be his Valentine! 🙂 This time though, instead of ending by asking for a Valentine’s date, he asked for something much deeper.
Jon got down on one knee and asked me a question I’d been dying to hear. The question I’d been dreaming of since I was a little girl. He asked me to marry him!
It was the most amazing night of my life. It was the moment every young girl dreams of their entire lives. It would have been the picture perfect moment, tailor made for Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. That is, if those things were even a ‘thing’ when it happened. Luckily for me – they weren’t! Even though I took my ring shot on my cell phone with pride – those chipped red nails would have totally thrown my Instagram feed! As if the dark, gloomy photo on my jeans didn’t kill it enough! We hope you enjoy these photos – we sure had a good laugh at them as we put this together!
