Have you ever felt like you have to have it all together before you can show up? Like your photos need to be perfect, your website needs to be polished, your Instagram needs to look curated, and even *you* need to look the part? For me (Erica), perfectionism went much deeper than simply wanting to do good work. In this deeply personal episode of Beyond the Camera, I open up about how perfectionism became a way of coping, people-pleasing, and trying to create happiness for the people around me – and how photography gave that unhealthy pattern an easy place to hide and grow.
Through grief, healing, honest conversations, and a lot of peeling back the layers, Jon and I unpack what it really looks like to break free from the pressure to be “pretty, polished, and perfect.” We talk about the difference between giving your best and needing to *look* your best, how perfectionism can actually be rooted in pride and the belief that everything depends on us, and why copying someone else’s business, brand, voice, or strategy will never replace being fully yourself. Most importantly, this conversation is an encouragement to photographers and entrepreneurs who feel trapped by perfectionism: you don’t have to mask who you are to build a successful business. You can show up as the person God created you to be – and that’s where true freedom, connection, purpose, and impact begin.
